Welcome to What's Afoot
in Cloverdale, a website devoted to the (sometimes)
irreverent, (always) opinionated observations of the changing
face of Cloverdale as seen through the eyes of…us!
January 17, 2002
You've probably heard of talking the talk
and walking the walk. Wellthis is talking
the walkWhat's Afoot
style.
Today was a great day
in Cloverdale. We set out at brisk pace (still trying
to combat the holiday bulge), arms pumping, feet slapping,
and everywhere our eyes landed, Cloverdale just seemed to
sparkle with goodwill and camaraderie. There's just nothing
like an unseasonably warm and sunny winter day in Cloverdale.
Wouldn't it be great if the Citrus Fair was this weekend.
Oh. But then it would rain. Never mind.
A big, fat, full moon was just rising in the
twilight as we cruised down Jefferson. Gorgeous! (How do moons
get away with being fat
anyway?) Did anyone else see
it? Ooh la la! What a night for romance. No doubt about it.
Speaking of romance
Chugging up Cloverdale
Blvd., we were relieved to see that the flower shop
at the North end of town has a truly sweet new window display.
(After losing one flower shop in town, we were feeling extremely
anxious over the delay between the Christmas display and the
new Valentine's display at our remaining florist.)
For you romantics in the audience, the owner
has created a very appealing window with an intimate table
set for two, strewn hither and yon with drying rose petals,
and (PAY ATTENTION GUYS!) a charming velvet jewelry box placed
enticingly in the center of one place setting. Okay. It was
a little bit girly-girl-girl but so what. Saint Valentine
would have wanted it that way. Right? We paid our homage with
oohs and aahs.

Have I mentioned that I'm addicted to
romance novels. And not the kind that "good girls"
read either. For some inexplicable reason, I'm currently attracted
to a series of Navy Seal books. This is the genre known as "romantic
suspense." Sheesh. Who would have thunk it? Navy Seals.
Romance novels. I devour them by the dozens. Believe me, coming
out of the closet was not easy, but the good news is that the
other "foot" in What's Afoot loves 'em too. Guilty
pleasures? So. Trashy novels? I think not!
Continuing through town,
my "inner flower child" was warmed to the
cockles of her itty-bitty heart at the sight of a group of
Cloverdalians staging an antiwar protest in our lovely square.
Honestly. Free speech really turns me on. I freely admit that
I'm on their side, but feel free to post your opinion to us.
(That's what the form on the contact
page is for.) And good job on the lit candles too you guys!
Actually I "Hurrahed" them, and was
intercepted 10 feet down the road by a citizen wanting to
know if the somewhat loud (okay very loud) outburst was in
support of, or in opposition to war. I hope I gave the right
answer.
So how does one reconcile an antiwar stance
with Navy Seal romance novels? Who knows. Go figure. Maybe
it's the uniforms.
And another thing
Isn't it glorious to live in a town where you
can stop your "mow and blow" guy on the street and
find out when he's gonna clean up the mess in your yard, wave
through the window at your mechanic (and he waves back), threaten
the neighbor kid if he bounces his basketball off your car,
root for a group of protesters, and plan a night out at the
fabulous La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant (after our walk
of course)
all in the time it takes to circle our
fair burg!
Until next time,
we hope you're enjoying Cloverdale as much as we do. Before
you leave, feel free to visit our rants
page for a bit of provocative dialogue.
